Washington, D.C. is located on the north bank of the Potomac River and is bordered by the states of Virginia and Maryland. Due to commuters from the surrounding areas the Washington Metropolitan Area, of which the District is a part, is one of the ten largest metropolitan areas in the country.

Although the federal government is the largest single employer, many organizations such as law firms, independent contractors, non-profit organizations, lobbying firms, trade unions, industry trade groups, and professional associations have their headquarters in or near D.C. to be close to the federal government. The District has growing industries not directly related to government, especially in the areas of education, finance, public policy, and scientific research.
